What is the Trust for Research and Education on the Arms Trade?

The Trust for Research and Education on the Arms Trade (TREAT) was established in 1990 to promote research into the international arms trade and its effects, and disseminate the results of such research.

What kinds of projects does TREAT support?

As a UK registered charity, the Trust confines its giving to purposes accepted in law as charitable and, in particular, those which fall within its aims as described above.

The Trustees look for a combination of the following when considering a grant application:

  • academic or other investigative research on arms trade issues, including, but not limited to, the relationship between the arms trade and social, economic, human rights and development issues; and
  • publication or other dissemination of the results of the research via the production of written, visual, audio or other materials which would educate a wider public on said arms trade issues.
  • TREAT does not respond to general appeals, fund deficits, or provide core funding. TREAT does not make repeat grants without a new application via the regular funding round.

What level of grants does TREAT make?

  • Grants range between £1,500 and £6,500.
  • Applications are considered twice-yearly. The next round, Autumn 2026, has a deadline of 1 November 2026.
  • After that, the deadlines for applications are 1 April and 1 October each year. Applicants will hear the outcome of their applications by 1 June and 1 December respectively.
  • You may apply at any time for grants of less than £650.
  • Where an application covers employment, TREAT encourages the payment of at least the Living Wage.

How do I apply to TREAT?

Applications should be no more than 1,500 words and set out clearly:

  • Brief details of applicant’s objectives, organisational structure and funding, and contact details;
  • What the grant would be used for;
  • How the work funded by the grant relates to TREAT’s objectives;
  • The question or problem being addressed, the methods and sources to be used, and any ethical issues arising from the work;
  • What impact the proposed work would have e.g. dissemination and engagement plans, with timescale if appropriate;
  • The amount of money being requested with an appropriate breakdown e.g. salaries, travel costs, equipment, research materials, and a percentage of overheads if appropriate;
  • If it is for part of a larger project, be specific about what the money requested from TREAT would be used for and how this part contributes to the overall project;
  • If an application is for work in collaboration with Campaign Against Arms Trade, it is essential that there is liaison with the appropriate person at Campaign Against Arms Trade making an application to TREAT.

Successful applicants will need to provide a short, one-page written report on the use of the grant within 12 months of receiving it.
