What is the Trust for Research and Education on the Arms Trade?
The Trust for Research and Education on the Arms Trade (TREAT) was established in 1990 to promote research into the international arms trade and its effects, and disseminate the results of such research.
What kinds of projects does TREAT support?
As a UK registered charity, recognised by the Charity Commissioners and the Inland Revenue, the Trust has certain tax privileges and confines its giving to purposes accepted in law as charitable and, in particular, those which fall within its aims as described above.
The Trustees look for a combination of the following when considering a grant application:
- academic or other investigative research on arms trade issues, including, but not limited to, the relationship between the arms trade and social, economic, human rights and development issues; and
- publication or other dissemination of the results of the research via the production of written, visual, audio or other materials which would educate a wider public on said arms trade issues.
All applicants must:
- explain fully and clearly how their proposal meets TREAT’s objectives;
- state how the proposal links with other work going on in the field and what gap it would fill. It is essential that there is liaison with the appropriate person at Campaign Against Arms Trade or other organisations before making an applications for collaborative or complementary work.
Where an application covers employment, TREAT encourages the payment of at least the Living Wage.
TREAT does not respond to general appeals, fund deficits, or make grants for on-going projects.
What level of grants does TREAT make?
Grants normally range between £1,000 and £5,000 and are considered twice-yearly. The deadlines for applications are 1 April and 1 October – applicants will hear the outcome of their applications by 1 June and 1 December respectively. You may apply at any time for grants of less than £500.
How do we apply to TREAT?
Applications should include the following information:
- name of the organisation and contact person together with contact details;
- brief details (no more than a paragraph) about the organisation, its general objectives, structure and funding;
- clear statement of the purpose and objectives of the application. The research topic and/or question should be clearly set out, as well as the methods and sources to be used, and any ethical issues arising from the research process. The dissemination plans should be clearly outlined, with a timescale if appropriate. If it is for part of a larger project, be specific about what the money requested from TREAT would be used for and how this part contributes to the overall project;
- the amount of money being requested with an appropriate breakdown eg. salaries, travel costs, equipment, research materials, and a percentage of overheads if appropriate;
- any other information which you feel is pertinent to this application.
